Michaelmas term 2005

Women's Team Meeting, Oct 19th 2005

Present:           Helen Haworth (Captain), Danny Axford (Coach), Rachel Hughes, Hannah Ledermann, Jessica Leitch, Charlotte Lemanski, Natacha Heffinck, Briana Short, Kat Smarth, Marci Reinhart, Lindsay McGuinness, Siobhan Moyes, Kirsty Hewitson, Katie King, Tamsyn Allen

Introductions

Members of the OUCC committee and Danny were introduced to new members of the club. It was great to see so many women - 14 women at the meeting, a dramatic increase and a huge improvement on a couple of years ago. The aim is to continue to encourage women's participation in the cycling club.

Last year

Our performance in the Women's National Team Road Race Series last year was very impressive - we finished 7th out of 30 teams, and most of those who beat us were cycling teams rather than clubs. We are the only University to enter a team in the series, and our presence there has been noted by many people in the cycling world. It was frequently mentioned to us how great it was to see new faces and a new team. We intend to build on our performance in next year's series, and with the benefit of experience hopefully we can do even better and encourage more women to try road racing. Huge thanks go to Danny for his support and advice throughout the season.

Sponsorship

It was decided by those present that we should keep remaining sponsorship money (totalling around 200 pounds) for race entries next year. The intention is to raise more money this year so that we can cover race entries, transport and if possible, racing licences. We are submitting a grant proposal to Atalanta's later this term, building on our success in the women's series races and performance at BUSA. Further sponsorship proposals will be sent out to businesses and club contacts later in year.

Training

In addition to the club training ride on Saturdays, there was a lot of demand for a women's ride on Sundays and a midweek training ride for those able to make it. Women's team rides will therefore leave Trinity Gates on Sunday at 10am and Tuesday at 12pm. Danny will join us on the Sunday rides later in term to provide advice on group riding, cornering and training drills etc. In addition there are circuits sessions at Iffley Road on Tuesday evenings at 7.30pm.

Women's bike

There is currently a lot of demand for the women's bike, and so we're trying to arrange for all those interested in riding to be able to share it. Lindsay is currently keeping it in town and coordinating its use.

Kit

The kit social will be the chance for all those wanting to buy club kit to have a closer look. All those who are thinking of racing for Oxford in any capacity next year should buy a cycling jersey as we are required to race in them. As last year, our team series kit will be black shorts and OUCC jersey.

Atalanta's

We are looking for a new rep to take over liaison with Atalanta's now that Helen G has left. The Atalanta's Club works to promote women's sport in Oxford, and holds many social events. Their cocktails are on Wednesday of 3rd week, Christmas dinner Monday of 8th week. Kat Smart has plenty of details for those interested.

Sports Fed Ball

The Sports Fed ball this year will be on Thursday of 8th week, the day after the OUCC Christmas dinner. It was a great event last year and the cycling club have done incredibly well again this year, so it would be fantastic to have a strong showing.

Hilary term 2005

Hilary term round up

Well done to Helen H, Lesley, Anne, and Katie who rode the MK Handicap on Saturday. Special congratulations to Lesley and Rachel who came second and fourth respectively in the series over all. Nice work :-) See here for more details of the race.

Formal Hall at Magdalen - 1st May

We have invited our benefactor "Mr Anonymous" to formal hall at Magdalen at 7.30pm on Sunday 1 May to thank him for his generous donation to us. He would very much like to meet the squad - please come!!! - email Helen and let know if you can come.

Antelope RT TTT

It would be a great idea if we could two teams together for this team time trial on 2 April, on a 50k/31 mile course east of Thame. We already have one team: Helen G, Helen H and Katie K. Do we have any takers to for another team? Please let me know by Monday night - so the entries can be sent off before the closing date For the benefit of those who have never ridden a TTT or watched the Tour TTT, it is exactly what it sounds like it should be: a team time trial, with teams of three riders swapping turns. The teams are timed by last rider (should be for a three-up, at least) over the line. Thus, it is important to match riders by fitness, as it's unhelpful if someone gets shelled out the back.

Provisional Vac Training

No formal rides are orgnaised over the vac as many people are away - but feel free to email the list if you want some girls to ride with. Here are a few possibilities: Long rides (80km) on 19th/20th March and 3rd April with Jess and Katie Easter w/e ride? Marcie is around... A possible mid week skills & tactics ride with Danny - watch the mail list for more details about this. Chaingang This is a tuesday evening short 20-25 mile ride which starts at 6pm at junction of Banbury/Marston Ferry roads. These rides run like the handicap events and are excellent training for road racing/team timetrials. Chaingang starts Tuesday 29 March and happen every week after that. Meet at 5.45 and set off about 5.50 pm and try not to get caught (although we proabably will!).

Squad Meeting 25 April - Provisional Date

It would be useful to meet up at the beginning of term to discuss the allocation of our sponsorship, have a debriefing on series race No 1 and Antelope TTT and organise the team for series No 3 in Surrey (8th May) etc. It will also be an opportunity for feedback on this term's performance and for you to ask any questions. Provisional Date: 6pm Monday of 1st week (25th April) at the University Club

Circuits

For people arround over the vac - circuits continue at Iffley and Brookes...

Tuesday - 7.10 pm for a 7.30 pm start at Iffley Road Gym - £2 for gym members, £2.50 for non-members. Fridays - 12.20 pm for 12.30 pm start at Brookes Gipsy Lane campus gym £3

Have a great vac.

Kat :-)

Hilary 2005 - 8th Week

Two races this w/e - lots of great news - all very exciting!!!!!!!! We had a great showing at the MK Handicap yesterday with a total of six girls racing - how cool is that?! Congrats go to Marcie for coming 4th and to Lesley, Rachel and Jess for putting in a great performance. Helen H punctured and Helen G got asthma and both pulled out. We also had a fantastic showing at cuppers today - well done everybody - and special mention goes to Rachel (28.39), Marcie (29.29) and Lesley (29.39) who placed first, second, and third respectively. Nice work! What a great way to start the week... :-)

Team Series Meeting

It would be useful to meet up before people disappear on vacation to sort out licences and work out who wants to ride particular events in the team series etc (come with a race list). It will also be an opportunity for feedback on this term's performance and for you to ask any questions. 6pm University Club Tuesday.

There are still plenty of race places left - too late to enter in advance for the first race, but you can enter on the line. The combined force of the men's and women's teams have enough people to hire a minibus and van for the three events at Milton Keyes Bowl on 26 Feb, 5 March and 12 March. The men's race is at 11.30 am and the women's at 2 pm, so it will be quite a long day, but it does mean that you'll have lots of support. If you want to race any of the days, and you have not yet told Marcie please let her know to book a place on the minibus.
