Report

The University road cycling championship was decided on 7th March on the Stadhampton 10 course. Facing arctic conditions, we still had a great turnout and a huge group rode out from Trinity Gates for the test. John ‘Tuckett’ Tuckett put in a blistering time to win the time trial, notching up a 24:17, a spectacular time any time of year but particularly for the first week of March. To put this in perspective, no one got within two minutes of John’s spectacular time. Added to his second place in Milton Keynes the day before, John had himself a pretty solid weekend. Rachel Hughes was the fastest woman, with a great time of 28:39.

In the main event, the University team competition, I take extreme pleasure in announcing that the winner of Cuppers 2005 is the St. John’s/ Worcester pairing of John Tuckett and Eli Lassman. The ‘St. Giles Shinkansen’ took the contest and the coveted faux-gold-plated cup with an aggregate time of 53:13. In second was Wolfson, with a time of 54:20, closely followed by Corpus, with a time of 54:31. Congratulations to everyone who took part. Thanks for making Cuppers a resounding success.

I would like to give a special thanks to all of the helpers who made Cuppers work.  Thanks to Jaime Aragon and Paul Tucker for timing at the start and pushing off, respectively and to Tom Curwen and Lucy Power for doing the timings at the finish. Thanks also to Lucy for providing the services of Walter for setting up and taking down all the signs.

Update: It was later decided at the AGM that composite teams should not be eligible for the competition when there where more than enough college teams.
