A time trial is a solo race against the clock over a pre-set distance. Often these are conducted on flat courses, with 10 and 25 miles being the most popular distances, although 50 and 100 mile races exist too. The format is usually out and back along the same stretch of road.

If you're doing it right, time trialing forces you to your limits so it's a great way of getting very fit. Learning to push yourself hard is not easy but it is a defining characteristic of bike racing, which comes in useful in all events including road racing. Because time trialing does not require pack skills and fast cornering it is a good way for new riders to test themselves out and get used to riding hard.

T ime trialing is good way to start racing because you don't have a pack you need to stay with - you go at your own pace and set your own records - you're racing against yourself and your fastest time to date.
