Cycling
Time Trials (CTT) govern time trialling in England and
Wales.
You don’t need to have a racing licence to enter time trials. However,
except for ‘Come try it’ events, you do have to be a member of a club
such as OUCC that is affiliated to CTT.
There are two main types of time trials: ‘open’
and ‘club’. ‘Open’
events are listed on the CTT website and anyone can enter these. ‘Club’
events are promoted as a less formal race for the benefit of members of
their club; however some clubs will let you enter if they have space.
Open events
are listed on the CTT website, unfortunately full details of who to
send entries to are only listed in their handbook. The Road Secretary
should have a copy of the handbook. Open events must be entered in
advance. Fill in an entry from available from the CTT website (see link
above). There will be closing date, usually 10 days in advance. You
should receive a ‘start sheet’ with your start time and course details
durring the week before the event.
If an open event is oversubscribed entries will be usually be selected
by fastest time at the distance in the last 2 years. So, if you don’t
have any previous times or they are slow look out for ‘long markers’ or
‘slowest 120’ events.
In the Spring and Summer months, the clubs local to Oxford join
together to run ‘club’ time
trials on a Wednesday evening (list of events can be
found here
on the Oxford City RC website). However as these are often
oversubscribed, they are restricted to members of the clubs who run
them. You may wish to join one of these clubs, e.g. joining OCRC will
cost £5 (membership form here,
leave the bit blank regarding "proposer" & "seconder"). Then,
to enter a club time trial all you need to do is turn up half an hour
before the start, ‘sign-on’ and pay a small entry fee (usually £2 or so
). Do make sure you have a back light though: NO LIGHT,
NO RIDE!
