Highworth - 60/70 miles

I don't know if there is a cafe in Highworth, but there might be. Another option would be to do this ride in reverse and stop in Faringdon. The variable distance depends whether you go over the downs to Lambourn or not.

  • Turn left in Bampton on the A405; follow this road to Faringdon. Incidentally, at Radcot you cross what I think is the oldest surviving bridge over the Thames.
  • Drop down the hill into Faringdon; at the crossroads, go straight over onto the B4019.
  • After about half a mile of gentle climbing, the B4019 turns sharply to the right, but if you go straight on to Great Coxwell and turn right there, you come out further along the same road with the added incentive of passing right by Great Coxwell Tithe Barn, a masterpiece of late medieval architecture. (This is turning into a good ride for the medievalist....)
  • Anyway, keep going through Coleshill to Highworth.
  • Turn left onto Highworth High Street, then left again at a roundabout onto the B4000.
  • After a couple of miles, you go fast downhill to take a right fork into Shrivenham; turn right then left (still on the B4000) and continue to Ashbury.
  • From Ashbury, the 70 mile option goes straight through over the downs and then down a lovely swooping valley, littered with great standing stones, to Lambourn .
  • The 60 mile option turns left in Ashbury to follow the B4057 along the foot of the downs
  • Turn left after 3 miles into Woolstone (care - steep descent!) and thence via Uffington and Fernham back to Oxford.
