Report

This year saw the MTB varsity take place at a Gorrick XC race for the 3rd year, proving that the Gorrick guys really do know how to put on a good race, with a fun, singletrack packed, course. The organisers did however let us down with some of the wettest weather that I have ever had the pleasure(?) of racing in, a mudfest. Despite this there were some seriously strong performances (mainly from Cambridge in the mens race where they provided riders 1, 2, 3 and 4 across the line) with a very good effort from Richard Lywood who came in 5th fronting the Oxford boys. Followed by Lloyd Pallett (on an uncharacteristic slow day due to a crash), Sergiy Milko and Edd Kenney-Herbert in 6th,7th and 8th respectively. The girls were badly let down by the FILTHY TABS who failed to field a team, well done to the Oxford girls who made the effort Marcie Reinhart, Helen Haworth, Gabby Harrison, Hannah Ledermann and Ruth French Hodson. The girls race was dominated by Marcie from the off with Helen and Gabby demonstrating the quality of the womens team coming in 2nd and 3rd respectively. Well done to everyone who took part, hope to see as many of you as possible at BUSA MTB.

Race Two: Women’s Varsity, the rematch. Southern XC, April 23rd 2006

It seemed only fitting to give CUCC another chance to field a women’s team, and so the women’s Varsity race was rerun as part of the Southern XC in much kinder conditions on April 23rd. The light blues Sarah Todd and Lorisa Dubuc faced OUCC’s Marcie Reinhart, Amber Tomas, Amy Webb and Katie King. The course, very different from Gorrick races, was both challenging and fun, with some great singletrack. Marcie, also racing in Expert, again led the way. Hurtling along not too far behind, Amber Tomas had a storming race, and all four dark blues finished very respectively for a decisive victory. It was fantastic to see such a great showing from OUCC women at both this and the original Varsity race – we look forward to further successes in the future!
