Dear All,

Hope you've had a great weeks cycling. It's been cold but nice and sunny Smile

News:
1. Rides this week
2. Note on group riding
3. OUCC Crew-date with Women's 2nds Tennis
4. Club Turbo Sessions
5. KPMG Careers events (19th Feb)
6. Sports Outreach
7. Cuppers and BUSA TTT
8. Key dates for your diary

-----------------------------------------------

1) RIDES THIS WEEK

There will be no organised OUCC training rides this week due to the KPMG bike ride on Saturday (see below).

** Those of you who have signed up (you know who you are...) to go on the KPMG ride and lunch meet at Trinity Gates at 11am, or at the pub at 1pm.

Sunday 9am, Martyr's Memorial. OCRC club ride: 84 miles, Northleach with a cafe stop.

-----------------------------------------------

2) NOTE ON GROUP RIDING

There were several near-misses with cars on the fast ride on Saturday, whilst we weren't to blame for any of them, I think we could improve our group riding skills so passing cars have absolutely no reason to complain...
REMEMBER:
* The rides we offer are NOT races, they're training rides. So please don't behave like they're a race.
* Take turns on the front, and when you're on the front don't hammer it off into the distance, keep going at the same pace.
* NO MORE THAN TWO ABREAST
* Re-read the bit on etiquette and group riding here: http://oucycling.co.uk/rr-events.htm

Sorry for the rant, but I really don't want to see anyone get hurt - some of the group riding going on on Saturday was abominable and that really doesn't help our (already fragile) relationship with motorists!

-----------------------------------------------

3) CREW DATE

This Wednesday (7th February):
With Women's 2nds Tennis at Mario's on the Cowley Road. If you'd like to come, sign up on the Facebook group here: http://oxford.facebook.com/event.php?eid=2230843945

James will send out an email nearer the time confirming the time we're meeting there...

-----------------------------------------------

4) CLUB TURBO SESSIONS

We've joined forces with the Tri club to offer a group turbo session on Thursday evenings - to sign up to them each week, please read below:

* Book a place by e-mailing Ross: ross.muir@medschool.ox.ac.uk - this must be done by Tuesday evening at the latest.
* Ross will email everyone on the session on Wednesday to let them know if there's room and the times
* There's usually one session at 7pm and one at 8pm depending on numbers.
* The sessions take place in the Eton Fives courts (for directions see below)
* Priority for these sessions will be given to OUCC and OUTri joint members, but there's usually enough space for OUCC members too.

Directions to the Eton Five's courts.
Take your bike in through the main entrance of the sports centre, go along the corridor past the gym towards the squash courts. Go out the double doors at the end and turn right down the steps opposite the squash courts and there you are!

5) KPMG CAREERS EVENTS

Lots of stuff going on Monday 19th February - read on...

Oxford KPMG Day, Monday 19th February

If you’re starting to give serious thought to your future career, you’ll welcome the chance to learn what major employers look for in their graduate recruits – and which new skills you’ll need to succeed in job applications.

KPMG’s Raising Commercial Awareness

1-2pm, Centenary Room, Careers Service

How do you demonstrate commercial awareness? Do you keep up-to-date with business news by reading newspapers and watching/listening to the media? What other ways are there to demonstrate this key competency that employers look for? Come along to this interactive session and find out what we mean by Commercial Awareness and how you can use it to your advantage in the selection process with KPMG and other recruiters.

To sign up for this event go to: http://www.i-grasp.com/uq/r.asp?q=7330,45390011

An introduction to Public Sector Finance
4-5pm, Centenary Room, Careers Service
Public Sector Finance provides a wide range of services to key areas of the public sector, such as health, education and local government. Find out more about the opportunities offered at KPMG, and within the financial services industry - from auditing financial statements, to helping organisations make good use of taxpayers’ funds, and supporting the delivery of improved services.

Wine Tasting Evening
7.30 – 9pm, Seminar Room East, Garden Building, Mansfield College
For KPMG, Corporate Social Responsibility is about reducing our negative impact on a global level. Our wine tasting evening is an opportunity for you to learn about the benefits Fairtrade offers to its growers and farmers and to sample wines from different parts of the world. A Sommelier will be on hand during the evening to provide commentary on the wines and a producer will give a short presentation on the impact that Fairtrade has made to his life and community.

6) SPORTS OUTREACH

We're starting the Sports Outreach scheme again this year, the basic idea is that you volunteer for a couple of hours a week mending bikes in the Oxford Cycle Workshop. It's great great to build confidence in bike mechanics, it helps out the OCW and OUCC get a cheque at the end of the year which can be spent on subsidising things for club members.

To get involved, send me an email and I'll sort out a rota and send you more details as they're confirmed - you can volunteer as much or as little time as you like.

-----------------------------------------------

7) CUPPERS AND BUSA TTT

I am sure that you all know Cuppers in the the Sunday of 8th week - 4th March @ 11.00am on the Stadhampton 10 course.

We will need some helpers for this so if you fancy doing some time keeping or another equally exciting task then please let me or David (mcgaw@robots.ox.ac.uk) know!

Cuppers will also be one of the selection races the OUCC teams for the BUSA TTT on 14th April held near Thame. We are jointly organising this with the Antelope RT, again if you're able to help by doing some marshaling, please let me know. I will send out more information about this nearer the time.
