Annual Review 2005/2006

This year OUCC has had a stunningly successful year!

We had large number of visitors to our stand at the Freshers Fair, and a huge number of riders out at our first ride of the year, the Fresher’s Ride.  This was bourne out by our membership figures which have increased from 80 last year to approx 100 this year.  There was a good range of rides throughout first two terms, including two rides every Saturday – a development ride and faster ride which catered for all the standards in the club.

Michaelmas was the term of the hill climbs with the following results obtained:

Club Hill Climb - 16th October 2005
1st Male Tim Wallis
1st Female Rachel Hughes
BUSA Hill Climb - 28th October 2005
Women Gold - Rachel Hughes
Men 8th - Tim Wallis Oxford men were 4th team, beating Cambridge
  16th - David McGaw
National Hill Climb - 29th October 2005
11th Danny Axford

Michelmas term also saw an extremely successful touring weekend in November.
Over 20 members spent two days in Wales in rather wet conditions but this didn’t dampen any enthusiasm with two road rides and one MTB ride being offered each day.

The term cumulated in the Sports Fed Annual Sports Award. OUCC were shortlisted for three awards (more than any other club) but unfortunately we were runners up in all three categories: Club of year, Sportsman of Year (Danny Axford), Sportswoman of Year (Rachel Hughes). Hopefully we will have better luck next year.

Hilary term saw the start of the racing season in Feb. Cuppers, held at the end of 7th week, saw the Wolfson team of Dave McGaw and Stefan Pantos retain their cuppers trophy. Dave McGaw recorded an impressive overall victory taking 2 minutes off his time from last year, with Rachel Hughes taking a minute of time from the previous year to claim first lady.

At the Mountain Bike Varsity March, Oxford women won but the men lost unfortunately. It was great to see so many ladies competing for the club this year.

BUSA results from Trinity Term 2006 include:

BUSA Team Time Trial - 8th April 2006
Women Gold Rachel Hughes, Helen Haworth, Marcie Reinhart
Men Silver Danny Axford, Mike Triebwasser, Ben Stone
BUSA 10 MileTime Trial - 29th April 2006 (Cambridge)
Men Gold Danny Axford
  Bronze Dean Robson
Team Gold Danny Axford, Dean Robson, Mike Triebwasser
Women Gold Rachel Hughes
  Bronze Helen Haworth
Team Gold Rachel Hughes, Helen Haworth
BUSA 25 MileTime Trial - 6th May 2006 (Oxford)
Men Gold Danny Axford
  Bronze Dean Robson
Team Gold Danny Axford, Dean Robson, Mike Triebwasser
Women Gold Rachel Hughes
  Bronze Helen Haworth
Team Gold Rachel Hughes, Helen Haworth
Team Silver Amber Tomas, Tamsyn Allen

The BUSA 25 also incorporated the Varsity match where Cambridge were comprehensively thrashed. In fact, Oxford Men’s A and B teams were faster than Cambridge A team and Oxford’s fastest female cyclist (Rachel Hughes) was faster than the Cambridge’s third counter for the men's A team. Needless to say, Oxford's women also convincingly won Varsity.

We have organised 3 open events this year - impressive stuff for a university club:

BUSA TTT Champs: Coordinated with Ralph Dodswell to get it run this year OUCC had a great number of teams out 2 men’s team and 3 ladies team and came away with both gold and silver medals.

BUSA 25 mile TT: Our contribution to the Open Time Trial calendar attracted a large BUSA field and a healthy open entrance. However, due to restrictions, the field was limited to 110 but this proved more than adequate. A massive thank you has to go to all those who helped run and marshal the event, which went very smoothly. Once again Mick and Marion Fountain did a fantastic timekeeping job.

Dave Ryan Memorial RR - 9th July 2006: This is in memory of an old OUCC rider, Dave Ryan, who was tragically killed by a speeding motorist in America, and will be an important contribution to Oxford cycling.

Other noteworthy acheivements in 2006 include:

Sports Outreach Scheme: We have successfully set this up whereby members work in Oxford Cycle Workshop for several hours a week, helping to repair bikes. We have implemented this scheme in Hilary term and it has continued in Trinity term as well. A big thank you has to go to those who have been fantastic volunteers: Eli Lassman, Will Meers, Edd Kenney- Herbert, Sergiy Milko, Dave McGaw, Rob McCracken

Sponsorship: We have been very successful in obtaining sponsorship from KPMG this year, meaning we can subsidise race kit next year for all members. A big thanks have to go to Katie and Helen for helping to secure sponsorship. We are looking forward to working with KPMG in the future!

Hopefully OUCC will carry on its successes next year and beyond!

Annual Review 2004/2005

The club has had a very successful year which cumulated in OUCC winning Team of the Year 2003-2004 at the Annual Sports Fed Awards with Danny Axford also winning Sportsman of the Year. Therefore, the club is thriving with well attended training sessions and social events, which included a well attended touring weekend in hilly North Wales. This has helped to guide the club to some great results in cycling on the road, off the road and on the track.

Michaelmas Term saw the club hill climb where the prize for first man was tied between John Tuckett and Ian Shapiro, while the ladies prize was taken by Rachel Hughes.  A week later saw the BUSA hill climb where Danny Axford comprehensively won individual gold and the men’s team of Danny Axford, Ian Shapiro and Tim Wallis took silver. Rachel Hughes took individual silver in the female competition.

In Hilary Term, in the mountain bike Varsity Match, Lloyd Pallet and Marcie Reinhart took gold in their respective categories, with Katie King taking a well deserved bronze in her first MTB race. This strong performance by the females meant that Oxford won in the women’s category and only losing narrowly in the men’s category. Marcie also had various successes in numerous mountainbike races that she has entered, with a notable highlight being silver in the BUSA Mountain Bike Championships.

However, Trinity Term, where the days are longer and the weather warmer, saw some even more impressive results for the club. The first major race of the season was the BUSA 10 Mile Time Trial, held just outside Oxford and ably organised by John Tuckett. Danny Axford took individual gold and, together with John Tuckett and Stefan Pantos, won the men's team silver. Meanwhile, in the women’s competition Rachel Hughes took individual silver and, together with Katie King, also took silver in the team competition.

The following weekend saw the BUSA 25 Mile Time Trial on a challenging course hosted by the Light Blues, which also incorporated the Varsity Match. Again, Danny Axford extended his dominance in BUSA events by winning BUSA gold and the Varsity competition, with John Tuckett taking a well deserved bronze. Not content with BUSA team gold, Axford, Tuckett and Pantos were also comfortably the winners in the Varsity match with Oxford men’s second team also taking a comfortable victory.

Meanwhile, in the women’s competition, Rachel Hughes took individual silver and together with Helen Haworth took BUSA silver medal team. However, this was the same position that the Oxford women had to settle with for the Varsity match gaining a second place behind Cambridge in both women’s competitions, but this result will definitely be reversed next year!

Furthermore, the hotly contested BUSA Road Race saw nine OUCC riders entered with Danny Axford placing a well deserved sixth. Meanwhile, at the BUSA Track Champs, everyone who competed came away with a medal, which is a fantastic success ratio.

2005 BUSA Track Medals
Gold Team Pursuit Miles Waring, John Tuckett, Ian Shapiro, Alex Graham
Team Olympic Sprint Miles Waring, Eli Lassman, John Tuckett
  Individual Pursuit (W) Helen Grote
Silver Points John Tuckett
  Individual Pursuit John Tuckett

OUCC had also entered 3 male team and 2 female team in the BUSA Team Time Trial Championships at the end of Trinity term but due to roadworks and then a village fete on the back up course this event has sadly been postponed. However, hopefully when it has been rearranged there will be more BUSA glory for the club.

Outside of BUSA events, OUCC members have had success, infact too numerous to mention, ranging from local road races and time trials to Premier League road races.  Also funding from Atalanta’s was also obtained to set up a specific women’s team to compete in the National Women’s Team Series, the only university club to do so, allowing female riders to gain greater experience road racing. OUCC women came a fantastic 7th place overall in this year's series.

Annual Review 2003/2004

The club has thrived again this year with in excess of 50 members. The year got off to a great start with a busy program of riding catering for a wide range of abilities through the autumn. This included a highly successful trip by 20 members to the Brecon Beacons in November for some riding in some seriously hilly territory. In the new year members got down to some hard training and we have had some excellent results in the BUSA races and retained the Varsity Trophy.
